Journal #15 Due Date May, 02 2010

In the article Ive read many scientist and researchers at a government lab have come together to invent a device that will be like a sun on earth. In the project known as the National Ignition Facility. This project has been taking place in Livermore National Laboratory. If the invention is successful this will hopefully solve the global energy issue. The concept of the mini star; is the worlds largest laser. Which is said to be the size of three football fields. The laser is then split into two parts which contain one hundred ninety-two beams. On the target they will apply two reactive isotopes deuterium and tritium which both can be found in seawater, this will then be wrapped in a very small gold capsule compared to the size of a thimble. Last but not least, the most important step firing the laser. This will produce heat as hot as the sun at one hundred million degrees celcius. The name of the star is Voila. In the process of the invention there has been an overage in budget and the date has also been pushed back. The release date is now set to the end of 2012. other researchers. Livermore isnt the only labatory that is taking a step at trying to stop global warming. In the article it states Bill Gates is funding research in a more modified version which uses fission instead of fussion as the Livermore researchers are using. As any other invention the Livermore researchers have those that doubt there project.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/science/04/28/laser.fusion.nif/index.html?npt=NP1

I feel as though the article was very effective. Im also grateful at the efforts of the research at trying to stop the global warming crisis. I think that it is very important that the project is done as soon as possible and there are no more set backs. I have to wonder how this will effect us on earth if a giant fire ball is created, and where the firing will take place. I think that the fission idea supprted by Bill Gates will be more safe and effective. I think that this invention will be great for our envirnoment in providing a greener earth. As it states in the article I do have my doubts about the invention but if its to save the human race Im all for it. I hope that it succeeds in every aspect the Livermore researchers intended it to.

Journal # 14 Due Date April 25, 2010

In Isreal there had been a ban on ipads. In the article that I have read the ban had been reserved. The ministry in Isreal had banned the iPad due to the WiFi not meeting the standards of Isreal as the same in Europe. It is said that the iPad's Wifi only meet the standards of America. In the article it is stated that some citizens iPad had been sieze due these standards. Many of the electronic saveey citizens complained to the government in reference to this issue. The communications ministry then completed a "intensive techincal scrunity" of the product. This was done by the vis a vis Apple team in Isreal as well some team members in Europe. The team came to the conclusion the device could be operated in different standards, which will meet the standards of Isreal. The officials then reversed the ban on the device so that all tourist and isreali citizens can use the device with out it being seized by authority officials. In the article it states once the iphone was released this was not an issue in Isreal but must get accessory.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/04/25/israel.ipad.ban/index.html

I feel that this article was very effective. I think that it was ridiculous for Isreali officials to seize a harmless device from both citizens and tourist. I feel as though they should have just accepted the product as it was released. In the article it clearly states they accepted the iphone and it is made by apple just as the ipad is. I dont really understand the wi-fi standards, but Im pretty sure that the people in apple wouldnt have sold a product in a country where the device wouldnt work. I feel as the communication ministry should have investigated the product at a early date it would have save time and the money of those that had there iPad's taken. The whole situation is bizarre and I feel that more time and money could have been put into something else.

Technology is on the rise everyday, and in the article that I'v read there has been a medical twist. In the article there were concerns of hackers getting into heart defribillators and isulin pumps. This will cause a great danger to the patient that have these life ruling devices implanting in there bodies. If for example as the article stated a hacker gets in to the insulin pump of a diabetic patient, it could either send the blood sugar sky high or sending to record lows. In either of the situations it poses a life threating moment for the patient. Therefore medical specialist want to come up with a way to protect patients from this ever occuring. In the article a student by the name of Tamara Dennings came up with an idea of a security passcode that only the patient knows. This posed great danger in itself, if ever a patient is unconscious who will control the heart rhythms if the patient is the only one that knows the passcode. Dennings came up with the idea of tattooing a barcode or invisible ink on the patient so that any time this occurs the doctors or nurses will know the password. The doctors and nurses would also have the option of carrying a device that deactivates the defibrillator at the time of emergency. While designing these devices there must be regulations, and the FDA must approve and is highly set on security of these devices. The wireless connection is also a concern just as wireless anyone with in fifeteen feet of the device can pick up a signal and get into the network. Motive and convience where also concerns in these projects, as stated in the article there may be a motive for someone to get the patient causing death.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/04/16/medical.device.security/index.html

I feel that this article was very effective in so many ways. I never knew there were insulin pumps that controls blood sugar. These inventions are so convient for the customer, but can be so incovient until a hacker gets into the device and cause harm or death. I believe that the presentation of Dennings were very significant. I dont feel that every patient that have these devices will agree to having a tattoed barcode on their skin. I believe the deactivation device or the password on the patients bracelet would be most effective in the time of a emergency. I do believe the FDA should be very strict when it comes to these creation and distribution of these devices because once its in the wrong hand its a death situation, which isnt fair for the patient who confide in there life monitor.

The article that Ive read is about taking new heights in saving the envirnoment. The invention is a solar powered plane. This plane is suppose to fly durning the day and through the night with out the use of any type of fuel, the plane will use only solar energy. The solar plane has twelve thousand solar cells implanted in the wings, and it is said to be the weight of a mid sized car. After six years of developing the solar plane it was tested. The test pilot by the name of Markus Scherdel flew the plane for eighty-seven mins at an approximate altitude of three- thousand ninety three feet in the air. The solar plane is powered by four electric motors that are designed to run durning the day and through out the night. The purpose of the solar plane is to save energy and it will be doing so by its solar cells in the planes batteries. The solar plane is set to be soaring in the year two- thousand and twelve.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=solar-powered-plane-soars

I feel that the article was very effective. I think that the solar plane is the next big then in energy conservation. The fact that the solar plane doesnt use a fuel motor or any type of fuel will be appreciated by many. This time is the best time for an invention of this type while everybody's going green. The solar plane will be great addition in adding to a cleaner environment. I do wonder how many passenger the plane will hold and if the solar plane will travel great distances. The solar plane would be a great investment for all in the business of travel. Although you do have to wonder what happends when batteries go dead, how will the solar plane operate and is there a back just in case.

Journal # 11 Due Date April 4, 2010

In the article that Ive read their is an invention that will take the pricking out checking your glucose level, for those that are diabetic. This invention by the name of Symphony tCGM. This invention has been created to check the glucose level without the pain of pricking your finger to draw blood. This machine has three general parts to it the prelude, bisensor, and the hand held device. The prelude described as the size of a nose trimmer has the ability to remove the outerlayer of skin in the place desired. It can be placed on the chest, back or any place desired. While removing the outerlayer of the skin it removes the hair as well, and sends electric impluses into the skin. Then the bisensor is placed on the area the prelude has prepped. The biosensor senses glucose as it is released through the bodies capillaries. This then sends a signal to the hand held device to give an accuarate glucose reading. The intent for this invention because it is not the first attempt to create a meter that a patient doesnt have to prick with is also to elimate the skin irritation. In the article there was another invention the glucose watch which didnt involve pricking, but caused skin irritation and was later taken off the market.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=wireless-blood-glucose-diabetes

I think that the article was very effective also believe that the invention will be just as effective. I have worked in a nursing home for quite some time and I have had lots of residents with diabetes. Just as the article states persons with diabetes have to prick their finger several times a day. That leaves thier fingers sore, less willing to check their blood sugar, which can lead to life threating conditions. It is very important for a person with diabetes to stay on top of their bodies glucose or at its most fatal point it could lead to a coma or death. If all patients had a wireless device I believe it would make things a lot less painful and much easier. Which in turn will result in happy healthy patients. This invention is great and I hope that will soon be accessible to all people that have diabetes.

Journal # 10 Due Date 03/28/2010

The article that I've read is about taking a new type of flight. The flight mechanism that has been created by the dreams of Richard Branson. This type of flight will take passengers to space and back. At a small fee of two- hundred thousand dollars, compared to NASA at least. The flight will hold six passengers per flight. Branson wanted to create a flight that any person can experience. In the article it states that there are approximately eighty thousand people on the waiting list. Before any tourist can climb aboard they must take a course three days prior to that time. The name of the phenomenon is Virgin Galatica. In the article it states that this pass Monday the flight successfully completed a carrier flights, meaning the VSS enterprise stayed attached to the carrier the entire two hour and fifty-four min fight at an altitude of fourty-five thousand feet. After continuous testing the flight will reach an altitude of sixty thousand feet. Mr. Branson wants to make this form of travel a know way of tourism for people everywhere, there will be further testing through two thousand and eleven, the date of the first flight hasnt officially been released.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/space/03/23/virgin.space.flight/index.html?npt=NP1

I feel that this article was just as effective as the invention itself. I think that this is the next big thing in technology. Im sure there are many people in the United States alone that have wanted to do space traveling and never had the chance to do so. This will be a great opportunity for those citizens. This would also be a great tourist attraction. I think that it was very thoughtful of Mr. Branson to bring this dream to life at a reasonable price for those who can afford it . The article didnt say much about the safety procedures and if the passangers have to sign a waiver, becuase the flight results are up in the air literally. In all I think this is the new big invention that everyone would love to watch even if they cant get on the flight themselves.

Communication barriers exist all over the world. An invention with a new twist will assist in evolving the communication barriers all over the world. The invention is a translator, and I know your thinking that there has already been a translator invented, and you are correct. A website was recently launched by the name of Meedan and what it does is translates articles from english to arabic and vice a versa, it also translates comments instantly. Another program Mojofiti allows bloggers to post and translate in twenty-seven different languages. In the article it states that Google is launching an invention that takes picture taking to another level. It states that by taking a picture of for example a menu in French, and upload it to google server it can be translated in english. This is all done by the technology know as statistical machine translation which in the end determines the language to translate.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20527524.400-are-machines-ready-to-break-down-language-barriers.html

I feel that this article was very effective, I feel even more that the invention it self will be greatly appreciated. I think that it would be great in the United States due to the high immigration rates. It will make all citizens feel welcome and cause less frustration, and increase better understanding. It will also benefit tourist that dont know all the languages in the countries they desire to travel and in turn make benefit other countries economies because more people would be willing to travel at the comfort of there translator. The tourist will also have the peace of mind when order dinner at a local diner thousands and thousands a miles a way. It will personally benefit me when Im in the nail shop, because I really want to know what the chinese technicians are saying. In all I believe that this invention will benefit many, but I have to wonder how many job cuts this invention will create, because the need of translators will be little to none.

Is it just as important to chase a theft online as it is on foot? The article that Ive read is speaking of the police actually catching the three men behind the largest virus in the world, reported by spanish authorities. It is said that the virus "botnet" infected approx. 13 million computers worldwide. The network built was Mispora which means butterfly in spanish. The network was built to steal financial information and other personal information from over one hundred countries. The arrest of the men is stated a break through in catching other online criminals. In the article it states that the United States is doing more to fight against cyber crimes, although cybercrimes arent a priority. It is close to impossible for authorities to catch and prosecute cybercriminals, because it is difficult to trace the virus back to one computer. Even if the authorities have found the source they would have to have the jurisdiction to prosecute the cyber theft. It also states that its not a crime to create a bad network but to use a bad network. In the article numerous suggestions are made on how to protect ourselves from becoming victims of cyber crimes. One suggestion was to educate internet users on protecting ourselves by security. The inventor of Symantec is in the process of inventing a behavioral dectecting network, that will dectect a virus by its behavior this will help determine whether the network is a virus or not.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/03/05/cyberattack.prosecute/index.html

I do feel that its just as important to catch and prosecute a cybertheft as it is to catch a person who robs a bank. I do agree that you dont hear much about authority catching those who commit crimes and scams on the internet, I think that it should be taken as serious. I understand that there is no easy way to trace the network or virus back to it original source. If there was a program set or a law stating that no one could create bad network, it would be less crimes on the internet. I think that it is very important for every individual that uses the internet on a daily basis to be educated on ways to protect themselves. The program to detect the behavior of a network is a brillant idea, but what do you do when the next mastermind creates a program to device the detector. I believe the day that one police is assigned to each computer all over the world is the day cybercrimes will no longer be committed. Until all we can do is protect ourselves with anti-virus downloads. Stay protected!

Journal #7 due feb. 28,2010

A recent invention has come about there has turned medical treatment and prices around. An invention by a Harvard chemist by the name of Whiteside. The invention is the size of a chip and uses the same lab work as the size of a credit card. This invention has been created to treat and diagnose different illnesses. It works by simply providing a sample of blood on to a tiney piece of paper, after this is done a tree like image will appear. This then will tell what type of diagnoses is required. It not only determines the type of disease, but the stage and severity also. The small chip-like piece of paper is convient for those countries that dont have adequate transportation or medical assistance. Those that are in these situations are able to take the test and by simply taking a picture of the results with a cell phone, the patient can recieve the diagnoses. This small chip size testing site is also invented to be less costly than any other lab work done that is more expensive.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/02/25/whitesides.chip/index.html

I feel as though the article was very informative as well as effective. I think this invention is brillant and will transform the way testing is done. I think that it was a great idea for Whiteside to make an invention that is first; much cheaper than any other lab and testing avaliable. I think that the it is also great that it can also detect the severity or stage of the disease, this will make it easy on the doctors and the patient, when it comes to knowing the proper procedure and treatment of the disease before it progresses. Its a great thing that its offered in other countries and by simply taking a picture of the results you can get you results. I couldnt help but think what if you sent the picture to the wrong number and someone got a hold of it. How embarassing that would be. I do agree with the fact that there may have to be a method of storing the paper chip so that it doesn't mold and isnt destroy. In all I feel that the way diseases are on the rise all over world, the technology advancements, and economic situations that this invention is nothing short of a miracle.

Advancement in Arab is none compared to many countries, some would like to think its the lack of support in science and technology. Mohamed H.A. Hasaan, executive director of TWAS would agree, and feels that nanotechnology would be a great advancement for the Arab countries. Haasan feels that nanotechnology would provide an adequate supply of water, food and energy to the Arab countries. With the assistance of nano-filters there will be an greater water supply, through the efficiency of desalinization of plants. Nanotechnology will improve the capacity of solar panels and also increase the crop output. Haasan wants to encourage the Arab countries to support young scientist and build merit programs designed for science and technology. The country spends approx. 0.3 percent of its GDP on science and technology ( Hasaan Mohamed), due this Arab countries have a lack of technology in the countries. Hasaan believes that with the assistance nanotechnology the country will progress and benefit from it.

http://www.physorg.com/news185942342.html

It is so amazing to discover everything that technology can be used for. I dont think about nanotechnology everyday and how it can be so vital to a person or a group of people. How by the use of technology there would be a greater food and water supply. I never even knew what nanotechnology was until I read this article. I totally agree with Hasaan in the fact the younger generations should be supported financially and mentally with the funds and schools needed to advance in the field of science and technology. If the country feels the need and urge to do this it could and more than likely would be beneficial to the country financially and resourcefully. For all these I feel the article was effective.

Is the internet really free services of entertainment and knowledge? According to the article Paying the Price for a free Web, its not. We as internet users according to the article are paying a price, not the price you may be thinking as in currency. We are paying the price of privacy and confidentiality. You might recall the time when AOL place the searches of X number of users online but under a coded number for security purposes. Well it wasnt so secure, because a report took keywords from the searches and in a few hours tracked down a woman that made the searches. In the article it stated that every month tracking cookies are put out on everyone to some how sum up your interest for the good of businesses. This is the price we pay to use the web for free.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8508814.stm

This article was very informative to me, because I had no idea that every month I was being tracked while using the internet. I wonder why it is illegal to hack, but legal to disclose information of using the online sources in your own personal space. After reading this article there is nothing personal about the internet anymore to me. I had heard rumors that your were secretly being charged for using facebook, but I never had a deduction from my bank account. Now I know what the secret is. A wise man once told me " nothing is free".

Technology is on the brain of many, literally. In Canada a new form of technology is being used, the name of this device is InteraXon. It is going to be one of the control systems of the lights at the Canadian Olympics. This not by any means normal switch pushing and pulling , but the by the use of the human brain. The Canadian Company says that this is the largest thought controlled computing installment. This invention will allow visitors at the Olympics use their brainwaves to control the lights in three landmarks in Canada, including Niagra Falls. The InteraXon works through a headset that has probes to touch the forehead which measure baseline brain activity. The rigged chairs that the visitors sit in are also made to work with the device by offering feedback to get the brain to its desired state. In more detail the headsets measures the brains electrical output and reacts to alpha waves, and with relaxation beta waves are evidence of concentration, this is the state that causes the lights to change colors. This could also make the lights brighter or spin faster. This is one the newest forms of technology that we actually have to "think" about.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/02/04/wired.olympics.mind.control.lights/index.html

I really thought that this article was very interesting, I feel like this is the beginning of a new trend of technology. We as humans have always had the means of using our brains to complete simple or difficult task, such adding numbers or picking up trash. I would have never imagined we would have the chance to use our brains to control lights or anything else. I think that this invention is very interesting, and so many other words I cant even think of. It s " mind " boogling to just think of how it would feel to be in control of something that you would never think to control with your brain. I think that a more enhanced form of this invention will make this a more hands free world. This is just the beginning.

Journal #3 Due Date Jan. 31 2010

The article that I read was based around the usage of cell phones while driving. In the article it stated that the new ban on cell phone usage while driving has not dropped the rates of accidents in the three states including the capital. The article feature a personnel of the Highway Loss Data Institute who basically stated that the only thing the " ban" did was reduce the use of hand held devices; which leaves the use of hand free devices. The accident rates where compare to those in states that did not have the cell phone ban and the accident was about the same. The personnels of the Highway Loss Data Institute are trying to figure out the reasons the rate didn't not decrease after the ban was put in place; who then came to a conclusion that even a hands free cell poses the same risk. As of Tuesday February 2, 2010 no commercial drivers are to text while operating a vehicle, another way to reduce the distraction of drivers. In conclusion the article was about the ban of hand held cell phones while driving and the little impact it has had on accident rates.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/01/29/cellphone.study/index.html

I feel as though the article was very effective, I also feel as though the ban on hand held devices was in a way also. Although the rate of accidents didnt decrease in those states mentioned in the article, the rates did not increase either. No one really will know if every citizen in the states have a hand held device or if they are still using a cell phone. Really.... think about it how many people have you seen driving with a cell phone to their ear today alone? Maybe if all citizen that have a license had to check with their local DMV to make sure that they had an hand free device then maybe the accident rates will decrease and maybe they wont. Not everyone can be accounted for, so until then the accident rates will more than likely remain the same.
I was kind of curious of how North Carolina did in the whole ban thing and I couldnt find anything, if your more successful Im interested in knowing.

In this article it was basically about a man who wanted to use our natural resource for fuel, literally. The man moved from New Jersey to Texas excute his plan to turn algae in bio diesel fuel. This he would call photon8. It was important that he moved to Texas because it was much more sunlight, and his conversion of algae to bio diesel needed sunlight. The name photon8 came from the theory that it takes eight photons to make this conversion and more sunlight for the change to be completed. He did not do this alone, with help from students, professors, and researchers in the Texas the use of the lipids in algae are being tested and will hopefully fuel our transportation.

http://www.cleveland.com/newsflash/technology/index.ssf?/base/business-56/1264368631112580.xml&storylist=technology

I really think that with all the efforts of most of the world to go green this would benefit us greatly. I believe that it will be cleaner air to breathe and less pollution in the air, although I dont know much about bio diesel and its effects. I do believe that it will be an economic change, being that most of our fuel comes from out of the country if we have a fuel based in the country it would cost less dollars. It would also create more jobs which will help the economy as well.
On the other hand I was thinking about the animals that actually live off of algae or use it to make their underwater homes and how it would effect them. It make cut off food supply which would cause a scarce amount of an particular underwater creature. It could also but the underwater animals in danger of being prey of a nother animal because it has no where, or very few places to hide.
The conversion of algae to bio diesel is a great idea, i feel it would be better if it was a plan made to protect the species that are being effected by this effort.
